La Sonora
Dinamita is a Colombian cumbia group. As one of
the first cumbia groups to reach international
success, it is credited with helping to popularize
the genre throughout Latin America.
The original
orchestra was formed in 1960 in Cartagena de Indias
under the direction of bandleader Lucho Argaín.
Argaín, being a visionary entrepreneur
and gifted musician, decided to make an orchestra
inspired by the Cuban band Sonora Matancera and
its success.[1] The group disbanded in 1963, but
was re-formed in 1975 under the direction of Julio
Ernesto Estrada "Fruko" Rincón,
the artistic director of the Discos Fuentes record
label[2]. [3] " While the group's lineup
has changed, it has always featured a strong female
vocalist to accompany its ten-piece: Mélida
Yará, Vilma Díaz, Margarita Vargas,
Susana Velasques, etc... brass instrumentation.[4]
In 1981, the group obtained a new leading vocalist,
La India Meliyera. Meliyera is attributed to the
success of many La Sonora Dinamita’s songs.
One of the most famous songs, in particular, is
“Mi Cucu,” from the album El Show
de la Sonora Dinamita: 16 Exitos. Other hit songs
from the album include “Se me Perdió
La Cadenita,” and “Que Nadie Sepa
Mi Sufrir.”[5] [6]
The group
continues to perform worldwide under the umbrella
of Apodaca Music Group, one of the largest management
and booking companies for Latin talent.
