The Salsa Legend,
whose given name was Alvaro Jose Arroyo,
died at a hospital in Barranquilla, where
he was being treated for hypertension and
fluid in his lungs, his manager, Luis Ojeda
said
Arroyo composed some
200 songs and performed with artists including
Celia Cruz and Shakira.
He first appeared
in the 1970s with the orchestra Fruko y
sus Tesos, and formed his own band in Medellin
in 1981 called La Verdad. Two years later,
he moved to Barranquilla.
The Afro-Colombian
performer "was very refined. He charmed
everyone with his voice, with the enthusiasm
and joy with which he sang," the leader
of Fruko y sus Tesos, Julio Estrada, told
the AP. "He didn't need any instrument"
but his voice.
Although never winning
a Grammy, Arroyo received several nominations.
The Bogota Philharmonic
Orchestra called Arroyo "one of the
most important artists of tropical music"
in Colombia, recalling the 2009 homage it
performed with him in the country's capital.
The Latin Recording
Academy lauded Arroyo for crossing many
styles including salsa, merengue and reggae,
even creating his own stile known as Joeson.
It said it would celebrate him at a special
awards ceremony in November.
Arroyo is survived
by his wife, Jacqueline Ramos, and eight
children

is the official statement posted via Facebook
by the Promoter for this event:
"Hey
people sorry about all the dramas.
Yesterday
i wasnt in an emotional or in the right
frame of mind to explain to you guys what
happened. To tell you the truth im not to
sure what happened myself. I cant understand
what went wrong because we had everything
covered, or at least we thought we did.
We
rang to make sure everything was cool before
he got on the plane and were told by his
manager that he had changed his mind about
coming.
Believe
it or not thats what happened. I had more
to lose by him not turning up than him doing
the concert, because we had sold a large
amount of tickets and were going to break
even at least in all the states.
All
i can say is thankyou to all the people
that helped me promote because apparently
i have won the promoter of the year award
from some of you guys (hope this comes with
$120,000 prize money because thats what
i lost on this concert). And i want to thank
all the messages of support from you guys.
It does mean a lot to me trust me. To the
dude that called me a scam artist man everyones
entitled to their own opinion but you can
GET YOUR $ BACK FROM WHERE YOU BOUGHT YOUR
TICKET, just take it back. I have not profited
from this at all, far from it.
Hope
you guys keep supporting any quality Latino
event, not just mine because after 4 months
work and so much $ invested plus countless
sleepless nights and putting your balls
on the line so to speak, i can handle a
slap in the face from an artist but not
from the people i do this for.
Thanks
again for the understanding & support
you have shown
STILL
STANDING
Don Juan"
