Oscar Calle's
new effort, Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo (The
Ones Left Behind are Coming with Me), is more fun
than its predecessor, with Café Tacuba and
Ruben Blades the big-ticket guests this time, Tacuba
serving as backing band and chorus on relatively
straight love song "No Hay Nadie Como Tú."
The seven-minute tropical jam "La Perla"
finds Blades not only singing but rapping and holding
his own, which may not surprise those familiar with
the talk-singing on his own classic '70s albums.
Visitante's compositions — calling them "beats"
or "tracks" sounds ridiculously reductive
— grab sounds from across the globe this time,
including New Orleans second-line rhythms and Dixieland
on "Gringo Latin Funk," early-'80s electro
on "Electro Movimiento," African guitars
on "Esto Con Eso" and a crazed Balkan
whirl on "Fiesta de Locos."
Though his
vulgarity remains unrestrained, Residente's apparently
sick of being Latin culture's whipping boy: "Que
Lloren" and "Ven y Critícame"
are direct responses to critics from within the
reggaeton scene and outside. (The chorus of "Que
Lloren" translates "I love it when they
cry"; the latter's title means "Come and
Criticize Me.") Combining the fun of its debut
with the follow-up's sonic adventurism, Conmigo
is a genre-redefining — if not genre-shattering
— triumph. Formerly Latin music's court jesters,
Calle 13 have become its future kings.

One of Reggaeton's
biggest stars, Daddy Yankee returns in 2008 with
not only a new album, TALENTO DE BARRIO, but also
a film vehicle of the same name. The album (which
doubles as the soundtrack to the film) is as impressive
a release as one would expect from the superstar.
Pulsing with slick beats and epic production, TALENTO
DE BARRIO distinguished itself from other Reggaeton
albums by moving away from the often monotonous
stylistic signposts of the genre and allowing for
a more diverse sound.
"Salgo
Pa La Calle" features production from studio
aces Luney Tunes and rides skittering synth lines
over buoyant beats, while "Suelta" opens
with an insistent thump before switching gears into
a more traditional reggaeton rhythm. "De La
Paz Y de La Guerra," the album's most notable
track, drifts the furthest from traditional reggaeton
with its distinct meringue vibe. Daddy Yankee delivers
on every track and keeps pace with the album's wide-screen
feel; in the process he shows the seemingly endless
possibilities for a genre once thought to be a creative
cul-de-sac

About Victor Manuelle:
Victor Manuelle
(born Víctor Manuel Ruiz on September 28,
1970 in New York, New York, is a successful Puerto
Rican American salsa singer, songwriter, and improvisational
sonero, known to his fans as El Sonero de la Juventud
("The Youth's Sonero"). He is identified
primarily with salsa romantica or "salsa monga",
but has also experimented with styles ranging from
Colombian vallenato to urban reggaeton. Unlike other
young salsa performers such as Marc Anthony, he
has neither recorded in English, nor made a Latin
pop album, nor (with rare exceptions) ventured into
acting, preferring to remain a musician grounded
within the salsa music genre he loves.
Although born
in New York, Victor was raised primarily in Añasco
and Isabela, Puerto Rico). Growing up in Puerto
Rico had a great impact on his youth as he enjoyed
salsa music (which was immensely popular in Puerto
Rico at the time). His singing career began by chance,
during a concert at his high school's graduation
party by salsa superstar Gilberto Santa Rosa. At
the instigation of classmates, who were going on
about their friend the sonero, Santa Rosa invited
Victor to jump up on stage and sing a song with
him. To Santa Rosa's surprise, not only could Victor
sing, but he "free-styled" the improvisational
soneo lyrics in the song, and traded soneos with
Santa Rosa. Shortly thereafter, on Santa Rosa's
recommendation, Puerto Rican bandleader Don Periñon
hired teenage Victor as a backup singer. During
these years of apprenticeship he performed with
numerous salsa greats.
Thanks again
to Santa Rosa, Manuelle was eventually signed as
a solo artist to Sony Tropical. His debut album,
Justo A Tiempo ("Just in Time"), which
Santa Rosa produced, was released in 1993.

After
9 years of absence, DLG (Dark Latin Groove) comes
back with "Renacer"(Reborn), an album
which is set to place then back in the top popularity
ranks. With the introduction of new singer "Miss
Yaya “and the musical mix of Hip hop, Salsa,
Reggae and R&B, this urban group is determined
to reconquer their Fans, with the launch of their
first single "Quiero decirte que te amo"
(I want to tell you that I love you).
With
a repertoire which sums up the Street beats of the
DLG Movement, according to James DaBarba and Miss
Yaya they bring in this album new improved rhythms.
With the musical support of James DaBarba, one of
the original group members plus the powerful voice
of Miss Yaya, DLG is confident about their comeback.
"We know that this movement awoke a lot of
interest with many Fans back in the 90's, who enjoyed
songs such as 'Morirá','La quiero a morir'and
'Volveré'. Now we bring an album which represents
the 'rebirth' of this musical movement which brings
together different genres" said Miss Yaya
Sergio George, the renowned musical producer who
has brought out his talent working with Marc Anthony,
JLo, Tito Nieves, La India and many other artists,
is the engine behind DLG's rise.
"I believe that Miss Yaya's talent is a key
element for DLG's success like they did it a decade
ago. The work that we are carrying on has had very
positive outcomes and feedback" says Sergio
"As long as there are people who want to make
Music and Fans that support the good Music, the
industry will persevere. It’s an evolution
that has always existed"
So far the Group's comeback has been accepted and

The
Adolecents 'Buscame' album is essentially a homage
to late 70’s-early 80’s salsa…
no watered down Salsa here. This album is everything
that made the golden era of FANIA so exciting -
Trombone heavy brass section, intricate arrangements,
great melodies, barrio lyrics. And for the ladies,
a couple of amazing Salsa romantica songs but with
a definite decision to keep the arrangements complex
and interesting. Definetly an exquiste taste of
Salsa at it's best..
If
it wasn't known that this album came out in 2006
It would have definitely been placed somewhere in
the early 80’s. Think Hector Lavoe, Ruben
Blades, Grupo Niche, Eddie Santiago, Gran Combo,
etc…You are probably thinking, some of these
artists do totally different salsa styles... That’s
the point!, this album is super diverse. In fact
it’s so ambitious it could have easily failed
but they didn’t, they 100% succeeded. The
album is consistent, unlike a mayority of Salsa
albums nowadays which have one or two great songs
and a bunch of fillers.
Now at this
point, you are probably asking why you haven’t
heard about this album or any of the songs off it?
Well, if you live in Venezuela, Colombia or Peru
you would have heard it. If you live in the US,
Australia or Puerto Rico you won’t hear it.
Why? Because the fact is Puerto Rico only listens
to Salsa moderna/romantica nowadays (think Victor
Manuelle, Marc Anthony, N’Klabe, etc). Sure
they are good, but there is great new Salsa dura
and Salsa romantica coming out which hardly gets
played.

Though the
bachata genre is pretty young and music lovers are
still getting to know its first generation, the
youthful Dominicanos of Aventura and their huge
fan base are ready to be recognized. 'Generation
Next', the debut album of Dominican quartet Aventura,
marks the beginning of a new era for this Latin
genre. With a little better than ten years between
Juan Luis Guerra's (the first internationally recognizable
Bachata artist) arrival on the major-label scene
and their own, it seems a short time period to be
called a "generation." That said, Aventura's
sound is truly something different than what was
first called Bachata, on Guerra's Bachata Rosa.
The instrumentation remains roughly the same; guitar,
guiro, bongo, voice, and bass, but Aventura's modern
urban influences are noticeable. In the past, bachata
selections have been in the minority, as Dominican
pop artists tend to lean toward Merengue. Not the
case for Generation Next, which places emphasis
on the more traditional Bachata style. Also, the
funk inflections and R&B attitude help define
the identity of a new camp. From this album forward
there will be a notable difference between merengue
and bachata records that are produced on native
soil, and those from Nueva York
About
Aventura
Aventura was
formed in 1994 by a group of teenage boys living
in the Bronx, NY. They were like the thousands of
teenagers who get together to make music in their
parents' den or garage. They liked the music of
their contemporaries, leaning towards R&B, hip
hop and reggaeton. But, with roots in the music
of the Dominican Republic, they also grew up listening
to bachata, the indigenous Dominican genre that's
known as the "music of sorrow or bitterness".
Aventura is
one of the most unique and innovative groups on
the scene today. After more than ten years of sparring
in the music business, these four young, dynamic
guys with a seldom-seen chemistry continue to auto-produce
soulful, original music that gleams with excellence.
They are the first “Bachata-boy band,”
the first band to fuse the essence of Bachata with
R&B, hip hop and other American pop styles;
the first Bachata band to perform in English, Spanish
and “Spanglish.” Aventura is also the
first Bachata group to feature songs that address
serious life situations, delighting fans in the
process, such as “Amor de madre”, "
No lo perdona Dios", “Hermanita”,
“Papi dijo” and “La niña”
amongst others.

Colombian Rock en Español phenomenon Juanes
continued his winning streak with 2007's LA
VIDA ES UN RATICO. Like Juanes's previous
albums, UN DIA NORMAL and MI SANGRE (both
of which achieved colossal international
success), LA VIDA ES UN RATICO is packed
with sharp songwriting, passionate lyrics
and performances, and deft guitar work.
Juanes balances between ballads (the title
track) and rockers ("No Creo En El Jamas"),
mixing in traditional Latin rhythm and no
shortage of radio-ready pop polish. The
lyrics are in Spanish, as usual, but that
hasn't stopped the non-Spanish-speaking
world from responding to Juanes's infectious
music, and it won't here either.
By the time of his
fourth album, La Vida...Es un Ratico, it was
difficult to imagine Juanes being any more
acclaimed or popular. He'd already won
trophy cases of awards, from numerous
Grammy's to France's highest cultural honor, L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and he'd
already topped charts in a diverse range of
countries, including not only the entire
Spanish-speaking world, but also such
unlikely markets as Germany, where his 2005
single "La Camisa Negra" was a number one
hit. Plus, he'd toured the world seemingly
without end in support of Mi Sangre (2004),
expanding his fan base to such an extent
that Universal chose to release "Me Enamora,"
the lead single from La Vida...Es un Ratico,
to media outlets in 77 countries. All of
this was accomplished without singing a word
of English, for despite his renown and
multinational appeal, Juanes chose to sing
only in his native Spanish, not even
recording alternate versions of his songs
for the enormous English-language market.
Eagerly anticipated by fans and industry
insiders alike, La Vida...Es un Ratico is a
step forward for the Columbian rocker in
terms of artistry. As expected, the album
brims with earnest songwriting, heartfelt
singing, dexterous guitar playing, and
glimmering production. An undercurrent of
Latin rhythm is well evident on most songs,
especially "Me Enamora," "Báilala," and "Tres,"
and there's a good balance of rockers as
well as ballads; for instance, the album
opener, "No Creo en el Jamás," kick-starts
the album with a surge of forward momentum,
while the back-to-back sequencing of "Minas
Piedras" and "Tú y Yo" is a lulling
mid-album pivot. Sequenced before that
mid-album pivot is a run of standout songs
("Me Enamora," "Hoy Me Voy," "La Vida...Es
un Ratico," "Gotas de Agua Dulce," "La Mejor
Parte de Mí"), each stylistically distinct
and memorably melodic. The centerpiece of
this run (i.e., the title track) is also the
centerpiece of the album; a passionate piano
ballad about life, love, and family, and
about how time is fleeting, the song "La
Vida...Es un Ratico" (which, in English,
translates to "Life Is a Moment") is among
the most striking and poetic of Juanes'
career to date, up there with "A Dios Le
Pido." As a whole, La Vida...Es un Ratico is
as just impressive as his past albums,
though following the incredible acclaim and
popularity of Un Día Normal (2002) and Mi
Sangre, it's no surprise at this point in
time that Juanes is capable of such mastery,
not only as a singer/songwriter, but as a
guitarist and co-producer. If anything, the
distinction to be drawn between La Vida...Es
un Ratico and its predecessors is that
Juanes has turned his focus inward here,
writing more about his own life than the
world surrounding it, and also that his
songs are increasingly driven by his lyrics
rather than his guitar.

CromaLatina A Salsa Band born in 2000 in
Cattolica (Italy) in a zone called Riviera
Romagnola where Music and dance is a
Tradition.
The
band is formed by 8 members all with
important musical experience: Fausto Olmi
at the piano, Leader and founder of the
band, Matteo Salvatori, Marco Roveti in
percussion, Renato Pignieri, Oscar Palmieri
and Yasser Merlet at the wind instruments
and Vocals by Max and Rita.
Cromalatina has contributed enormously to
the evolution of Latin Music in Italy hence
Number one in the Italian Salsa scene. The
band is also the only one to figure in the
American Latin charts as Salsa Made In
Italy. Cromalatina has shared the stage with
many famous International artists such as
Alfredo De La Fè, Jhonny Ray, Jimmy Bosch,
Paulito FG, Frankie Negron, Luisito Rosario,
Henry de Aventura, Toke D’Keda amongst
others.
In
summer of 2004 Cromalatina records a new
single called "Una Nuova Estate" (Un nuevo
verano or A new summer), which is positioned
in the top 30 most danced Latin songs in the
United States, a real achievement given that
the lyrics of this song are in Italian.
The
following year they launch "Cromalatina
Llegò "once again making it to the top
charts both in Italy and the USA, then
initiating artistic relationships with
before mentioned famous names.
In
2007 the moment arrives when the sensational
album titled "Siguiendo La Linea" is
launched under the production of Planet
Records. This is their first launch
featuring important artists such as Luisito
Rosario, Jesus "El Niño" Alejandro, Toke
d’Keda, Henry Santos de Aventura and others.
"Siguiendo La Linea" is definitely a
masterpiece combining the sensuality of both
Latin languages "Spanish and Italian"
together with the sensuous Latin beats such
as Salsa and a touch of Bachata, making a
seamless fusion. A must have for all lovers
of Latin music.

The album also pays
homage to the most influential and
universally respected Latin musicians of the
past fifty years. Some of the artists
joining Estefan on this album include Grammy
award winning artist Carlos Santana, Johnny
Pacheco (whom many refer to as the
'Godfather of Salsa'), trumpet virtuoso
Alfredo 'Chocolate' Armenteros, conga drum
diva Sheila E., actor and musician Andy
Garcia, and Cachao who is credited as the
creator of Mambo.
This blend of musicians on "90 Millas" is
historically significant on a number of
levels. This is the first, and quite
possibly the last time that all of these
legendary artists will play together on one
CD. The newly released first single, "No
Llores" features guest performances by famed
Latin musicians Carlos Santana, Sheila E.
and Jose Feliciano; just one of the
incredible collaborations found on this CD.
Being completely in Spanish, this further
enriches and allows listeners who are not
fluent in Spanish to truly appreciate all
aspects of this album. The music, the
rhythms, the beat, are typical of Estefan
and the standard that she sets forth in her
music.
"90 MILLAS" is a roots album. Its songs
portray authentic Cuban sounds through
upbeat danceable tracks like 'Pintame' and 'Esta
Fiesta No Va Acabar,' to poignant ballads
like 'Yo No Cambiaría' and celebratory
tracks like 'Cuando Cuba Sea Libre.'
Described by Gloria "an amazing explosion of
rhythm," the title track '90 Millas' is
Afro-Cuban - a genre typically recognized by
its use of syncopated rhythm. Of dueting
with La India on this track Gloria says,
"…It was a great feeling in the studio
between her and me because we've wanted to
work together for a long time. And this song
particularly was very special to us because
it is very representative of the wild
rhythms and the differences that we have in
the rhythms of Cuban music.

El
Cantante features Anthony's best
interpretations of ten classic tunes from
different phases of tropical music singer
Héctor Lavoe's legendary career. Showcasing
one of today's hottest stars portraying the
man who redefined Latin music back in the
1960s and 70s.
The sad, tragic story of late Salsa singer
Héctor Lavoe has been told and retold in
various medium, most recently and famously
in the film El Cantante, starring Marc
Anthony and wife Jennifer Lopez. Anthony is
also the lead, so to speak, of the film's
soundtrack, a collection of songs
popularized by Lavoe, who became one of
Salsa's most fabled vocalists during his
tenure with the Fania All-Stars.
The Fania influence is pervasive in this
set, where tracks are penned mostly by Ruben
Blades, Willie Colón and Johnny Pacheco, and
new arrangements decidedly hark back to
their 1970s and early 1980s origin. Even
Anthony admits that in performing these
songs; classics for many Salsa fans, he
tried to get into Lavoe's mind, studying his
phrasing and interpretations in detail. As a
result, this album works both for those who
are only discovering Lavoe as well as for
those who are die-hard fans and want to hear
the songs in new versions. For fans of
Anthony alone, it is a departure in
interpretation; here, the singer opts for a
more sober, matter of fact delivery than the
more emotional delivery he is known for.
Although the first single off El Cantante is
"Mi Gente," the album kicks off with the
title track, which is really Lavoe's letter
of introduction. After an intro reminiscent
of Ruben Blades' Plástico (Blades wrote this
track), Anthony launches into this
biographical rumination, a complex melody
over dueling strings, percussion and piano.
As with "Plástico," there is not a chorus
but rather a repetition of verses which
later dissolve into lengthy improvisations
and soneos (vocal improvisations).
Perhaps the best-known dance track here is "Che
Che Colé," a Willie Colón composition with
multiple layers of percussion and
distinctive horn riffs.
Fans of Jennifer López may want to jump to
the end of the album for "Toma de Mí," the
track that was used for the film's end
credits. It is a pop ballad written
expressly for López, and its genre brings a
touch of universality to this collection.
It was this clever blend of mundane and
stylish that made Lavoe so appealing, and
that still works today.

Spanish
Harlem Orchestra's third release isn't
appreciably different from their first two,
but that's not a criticism; as before, the
13-piece orchestra delivers a nonstop volley
of pure neo-retro Salsa Dura that couldn't
possibly be improved upon. Led by pianist
Oscar Hernández, SHO takes its cues from the
heyday of Tito Puente, Machito and the other
revered Latino bandleaders of the mid- to
late 20th century. The coordinated horn
blasts snap in and out with regularity, the
percussion is endlessly dizzying, the
nuanced solos impressive and the vocalists
all engaging. Most of the tunes here are
originals, and the arrangements by
Hernández, vocalists Willie Tórres, Ray de
la Paz and others are polished to
perfection. Paul Simon is the big-name guest
star this time out taking a lead vocal on
the album closer, his own "Late in the
Evening" is actually the weakest track on an
album that otherwise has none, if only
because it feels out of context. But not to
worry; this is Latin dance music the likes
of which is rarely heard anymore, and that
in itself is worthy of celebration.
In the late ’60s and early ’70s, before
there were a half-dozen Latin charts and
twice as many subgenres, the essence of
Latin music, at least on the East Coast, was
Salsa. With musicians and ideas traveling
back and forth on a kind of San Juan/New
York shuttle, the heart of Salsa was Spanish
Harlem, where Afro-Caribbean rhythms blended
with the beat of the streets and the call of
the dancehall. Oscar Fernandez brings that
sound and spirit back without kneeling to
nostalgia or compromising with current
trends. The fundamentals are all here;
clearly enunciated piano vamps, chant-and-response
vocals, trumpets and trombones blazing
upfront and the rhythms of congas, bongos,
timbales and maracas. The SHO’s elegant yet
muscular ensemble playing makes this classic
style sound as vivid and magnetic as ever.
On United We Swing, Spanish Harlem Orchestra
continues in the same
classic-meets-contemporary sound, but with
refreshing originality. Nine of the songs
are original compositions grounded in the
unique identity the band has forged based on
the musical legacy of 'El Barrio', a
pulsating Eastside community in NYC located
to the south of 125th St that gave rise to
Boogaloo, Latin Soul and Salsa.
This album has something for everyone.

Reggaeton is a very
formulaic style of music. It generally
contains a "dem bow" rhythm and Spanglish
rapping.
Daddy Yankee was a rapper before he realized
the future was in Reggaeton, so it's not out
of character for him to attempt to bridge
these two sounds on in this release.
When 2004's BARRIO FINO became one of
Reggaeton's best selling albums, and one of
the genre's defining documents, Daddy Yankee
was elevated to iconic status. That status
was helped by the release of BARRIO FINO EN
DIRECTO, a set of live recordings, videos,
and new singles released in 2005, but fans
had to wait until 2007 for a new studio
album. That wait was rewarded with EL
CARTEL: THE BIG BOSS, a collection that
arguably tops the now-classic BARRIO FINO in
ambition and appeal. At 80 minutes and 21
tracks, EL CARTEL is a sprawling
achievement, offering up no shortage of
skittering, head-nodding beats,
lightning-quick rhymes, and colorful,
genre-twisting samples. The album features
numerous collaborations with U.S. pop
musicians, including Fergie, Akon, William,
and others, ensuring Daddy Yankee's
crossover success with English-language
audiences, and broadening the artist's
already widespread international appeal.
Over half the album's tracks sound
tailor-made for the singles chart, and its
wild, danceable grooves and top-tier
production throughout makes it a prime
candidate for the summer party album of
2007.

After 14 albums, Chayanne (born Elmer
Figueroa de Arce) is back with the next one
"Mi Tiempo" (My Time) out on April
2007 via Sony BMG. It was born out of the
hands of producers Jose Gentile and
Sebastian de Peyrecave.
Chayanne has spread his music influence
throughout North and South America and
Spain. He has had 8 hits in the #1
Billboard's Hot Latin Charts. With the new
album, he may have another one as it still
employs his trademark: romantic ballads
mixed with up-tempo material. "I like to
stay close to my truth," he said.
He further explained, "I'm not going to test
the waters with something like heavy metal
because that's not who I am. I'm a person
who was born on an island and has traveled
throughout Latin America many times. So, I
can work fusions with these rhythms because
I've been there. I wanted to do something
that could travel throughout Latin America
but within the backbone of my style, which
is pop."
And as usual, he would be touring in US to
promote this latest piece starting from
April 2007. He sets a plan that the singles
from the album will be released for the
first time in each tour. For example, the
ballad "Si Nos Quedara Poco Tiempo," will
debut live at the tour's first date.
Definitely a must have for the romantic at
heart.

Jennifer Lopez changes
direction on 'COMO AMA UNA MUJER' (How A
Woman Loves). Her first entirely Spanish
album boasts 11 tracks, mostly ballads that
reveal a new maturity and depth in the pop
star's voice and deportment. Elegant,
intense and lush, these songs bypass the
dance floor and aim directly at the heart..
In the hands of producers Marc Anthony,
Estefano, and Julia Reyes, the tracks leave
plenty of space for the star to take command
of these romantic moments and melodies. The
high points (especially "Tu," and the finale
"Adios") are custom-made to set the mood for
thoughts of longing and love, in any
language.
This return to her
Latin roots suits Lopez well, as she warmly
embraces her Puerto Rican heritage without
abandoning her keen pop sensibility. With
top-notch production by Anthony, lauded
Colombian musician Julio Reyes Copello, and
others, this album fully showcases J. Lo's
range, as string-laden ballads ("Me Haces
Falta," "Tu") are balanced out by energetic
dance tracks, most notably the dramatic lead
single "Que Hiciste." Easily one of Lopez's
most impressive and accomplished records,
COMO AMA UNA MUJER finds the singer entering
a new phase with creativity and confidence.
Spanish-speaking fans will enjoy hearing
Jennifer Lopez sing these songs, even if her
delivery is a bit clumsy at times. They will
also find that the lyrics are clearly
enunciated and easy to hear; a perfect
supplement to their vocabulary and verb
conjugation exercises. Sweethearts of any
nationality will understand the message that
love is a complicated, beautiful thing.
Definitely a must have for the romantic at
heart.

Ricky Martin MTV
Unplugged is entertaining, soothing and
sparkling.
Following his last album Life, which
experimentally moved in innovative
directions but was poorly received, with
Unplugged Martin goes back to his roots,
delivering an acoustic album of oldies from
previous albums along with three new tracks.
Martin's voice is in fine form, smooth and
strong, and there's a large, tight band
backing him up, making the overall effect
colorful and lush.
While the track selection is not a simple compilation
of all his hits - for instance, "Livin' La
Vida Loca" is not included - the songs work
well together and the end result is musically cohesive
and pleasing. Four of the tracks, including "La
Bomba" are from "Vuelve" and three
others are from "A Medio Vivir". Of the
three new tracks, "Tu Recuerdo' is by far the
strongest new offering.
Ricky Martin has spent a lot of time experimenting
with different world sounds in "Sound Loaded"
and "Life". While there's little doubt
that he will continue trying out different musical
fusions and sounds in the future, it is gratifying
to have an album that does a great job of showcasing
the music that boosted him to superstardom.
It is an album for the faithful; instead of stretching,
Martin is relying on his strengths, but it will
satisfy those who still stand by Ricky Martin after
all the ups and downs in his career.

With the
release of this new CD, El Gran Combo de
Puerto Rico gives us the chance to witness a
new direction in its career. “Arroz con
habichuela” includes ten new songs that
demonstrate that their passion for music, as
well as their love for salsa, only grows
with every album. Standout songs include the
first promotional single, “No hay manera:”
it’s a perfect example of the essence of
this legendary Puerto Rican artists who, on
their latest release with Discos 605, a Sony
BMG company, give us more “music to keep on
dancing,” as they often tell fans.
The great orchestra
hasn’t put out an album since 2004's Aquí
Estamos Y... ¡De Verdad!, so Arroz con
Habichuela’s long overdue from one of the
major bands in the history of Puerto Rican
music. Rafael Ithier’s idea and band are
still intact, producing some of the most
subtle salsa in existence, perfectly
constructed and perfectly played, never
relying on the blast or volume to make up
for ability. And what material: from the
instantly memorable coros on “Si La Ves Por
Ahi” to the amazing, almost unheard of tempo
on “Arroz con Habichuela” (which, weirdly
enough, sounds like something that Pupy, in
Cuba, might play), there isn’t a mistake on
the album. But let me get back to the
perfection here: listen to how the bell on
“Esa Mujer” changes patterns in the
beginning of the tune to juice the last few
bars before the bridge; it’s so careful and
sophisticated. And strangely enough, the
recording makes the band sound small, and
almost live; the recording makes the music
realistic, as if you were listening in a
small hall to a rehearsal. So much the
better. The reduction in size makes the
glory of the orchestra that much more
evident, without hiding anything behind too
much echo or production gloss. The
brilliance is all there in the band, begging
to be turned up, lived with. A masterpiece.

Universal Music
released 'Rhythms Del Mundo', an exciting
collaborative album, which fuses the hot
Afro-Cuban sounds of The Buena Vista Social
Club Musicians" with tracks from some of the
buzziest bands, including The Arctic
Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, The
Kaiser Chiefs, Jack Johnson and many others.
It also features the amazing vocals from
famed Cuban vocalists, Omara Portuonda, and
the last ever recording of the much beloved
Ibrahim Ferrer. The album is in aid of
Artists Project Earth (APE), which lends
support for natural disaster relief and
climate change awareness
Rhythms Del Mundo is
an electrifying album that fuses music of
different cultures and comes up with a
melting pot of rare sounds. Arranged by
Demetrio Muniz, Miguel Patterson and Kenito,
the main recording sessions took place in
Havana at Abdala Studios from the April 2005
to June 2006. While the majority of the
vocals remain the same, The Buena Vista
Social Club musicians took the original
orchestration from each song and created
something utterly unique casting their
trademark mastery over each track. Their
noted and exceptional musicianship seduced
even the notoriously protective Arctic
Monkeys into handing over their track. As a
rule, the band has never licensed their
music for compilation albums, but were so
enamoured with the result that they were
happy for it to be included on the album. As
well as The Arctic Monkeys' track 'Dancing
Shoes', Rhythms Del Mundo included reworked
tracks such as Clocks by Coldplay, Better
Together by Jack Johnson, She Will be Loved
by Maroon 5, High and Dry by Radiohead and
others.

famed Cuban singers Omara Portuondo and the

singer, Ibrahim Ferrer, who died tragically
in 2005. The other Cuban musicians from The
Buena Vista Social Club who perform on this
album are as follows: Barbarito Torres,
Amandito Valdes, Virgilio Valdes, Angel
Terri Domech, Manuel 'Guajiro' Mirabal,
Orlando Lopez 'Cachaito' and Demetrio Muniz.
The artists on this
album fully support the record as a show of
commitment to the music and to the cause
that it endorses.

Victor
Manuelle's “Decision Unánime”
(Unanimous Decision)
reads like an obvious bid for pop stardom
slick production, big-name pop and Reggaeton
vocalists, but it's ultimately anything but
that. Instead, it's a grand reaffirmation of
his status as one of the genre's prominent
Salseros. Manuelle could likely have a
crossover career à la Marc Anthony, but he's
simply not interested. Manuelle instead showcases
his polished presence and suave good looks
amid sweltering Salsa rhythms, which make up
the bulk of “Decision Unánime”
If you're in doubt,
listen to "Cenizas" or "Hazme Sentir", both
of which start out at a slow simmer and boil
their way to major salsa heat. Always
danceable, always engaging, you're going to
dance to this album for years to come
More about Victor Manuelle...
Victor Manuelle started
his career at his high school graduation
party where Gilberto Santa Rosa was the
featured act. His friends were telling Santa
Rosa about Salsa crazy Manuelle, and Santa
Rosa asked him on the stage to sing with
him. The rest is Salsa history…
“Decision Unánime” is
Manuelle's 10th album, and it's his best.
Somewhat of a departure from his past work,
it features polished orchestration, but
never becomes slick. Featuring reggaeton's
Don Omar and Hector El Father, the album
turns them into Salseros rather than forcing
Manuelle into the standard Reggaeton mold.
The album's one ballad, "Nuestro Amor Se Ha
Vuelto Ayer" with guest Yuridia is lovely
and a respite from non-stop Salsa heat.

Oscar D'Leon never seems to disappoint.
Extremely durable and equally reliable.
Whether it's the violin tinged "Hablando
Solo" or the fiery Flamenco-Salsa track "Corazón
Gitano," his heart and soul are clearly
present. Listen to "Mi Raza Negra." Oscar
can rock. On Fuzionando, like the recent
Andy Montañez release Salsatón, D'Leon
utilized the best Reggaetón talent to
further embellish a handful of already
powerful Salsa tracks. Joining the veteran
singer on this hard-driving Salsa release
are guests Tego Calderón, Barullo, Wahero
and Zona 7. And on "Me Fallaste" another
Salsa legend, Gilberto Santa Rosa, shows up
to spar with D'Leon.
More about Oscar...
A
skill at improvisation is combined with a
highly textured vocal tone by Venezuela-born
Oscar d'León. A top-ranked performer in his
homeland, d'León has continued to solidify
his following throughout the world. A joy
for entertaining has been a constant thread
throughout d'León's career. In a 1996
interview with the Chicago Tribune, d'León
said, "My message is not about ecology or
politics, but it's simply that people have a
good time and remember me as someone who
loves them." Born in the Caracas
neighbourhood of Etamin, d'León was
influenced by Cuban musicians including
Beny Moré
and la Sonora Mantacera and by New
York-based Latin performers including
Eddie
Palmieri
and
Willie Colón.
He taught himself to play bass by listening
and playing along to records. "I am not a
maestro like they say," he explained. "I try
to make my instrument sound coherent."
D'León
balanced his early career as a vocalist with
full-time employment as a taxi driver and
factory worker. Forming a band, la Dimensión
Latina, in 1973, he recorded his first hit,
"Pensando en Ti," shortly afterward. Three
years later, he formed a second group, la
Salsa Mayor.
D'León,
who's known affectionately as "El Leon de la
Salsa" (The Lion of Salsa), has toured with
very large groups. In addition to touring
and recording with a 19-piece band featuring
five saxophones, four trombones, and four
trumpets, d'León toured with a 15-piece
group in 1996. And after a slew of releases
in the late '90s, d'León returned in the new
millennium with
Doble Play.

Probably the biggest of the “Rock en Español”
bands, Mexican group Maná has a long history
and are considered the kings of Latino rock
with a huge following in the United States.
The core members started recording together
under another name in the early 1980s,
finally releasing the debut Mana album in
1988. Their sound is comprised of hard rock,
more mellow pop sounds, and hints of calypso
and reggae grooves and a heavy '80s rock
influence. There's a strong socio-political
foundation to the band's lyrics, borne out
by the members' social activism, and marking
them as a "people's band." As a massive
international presence, Mana has
collaborated with Carlos Santana and Ruben
Blades, and has earned numerous Grammys,
paving the way for the success of younger
Rock en Español
artists.
Their lush sound captured the first annual
Latin Grammy Awards in fall 2000, for Maná
won the award for Best Pop Performance by a
Duo or Group with Vocal for "Se Me Olvido
Otra Vez" from their 1999 release MTV
Unplugged. 2002's Revolución de Amor
featured Carlos Santana and Rubén Blades as
guest performers. Sandra Brennan
Amar es Combatir,
Maná's 9th studio album and first in four years,
was produced by Maná with the special collaboration
of recording engineer Tom Russo (Audioslave, Macy
Gray, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton). It also includes
a duet with
Juan Luis Guerra. The
#1 Latin Single Labios Compartidos was sung live
at the Premios Juventud 2006.

Mostly influenced by his uncle Israel
Stuart, aka Timbalero, Puerto
Rican-descendant Michael Stuart participated
in Johnny Rivera's orchestra before starting
his solo career. He debuted in 1996 with the
release “Cuentos De La Vecindad”,
featuring a Latin version of Michael
Jackson's "The Lady in My Life," followed by
1998's “Retratos” and 2000's
“Súbele El Volúmen”. In addition,
Michael Stuart joined a tropical compilation
with "El Beso" and "Enseñame Tú."
Michael Stuart claims to
bring it home on his latest release “Back
to da Barrio”, and after a career that
has identified with the urban rhythms as
much as the Latino, this record definitely
meets the expectations of the Salsero at
heart. While there are plenty of hints that
this isn't your old school Salsa, it is
great Salsa nonetheless. Leaving his drum
sequencer behind for these sessions, the
instrumentation and arrangement incline more
towards the likes of Oscar d'León than the
hip-hop tinged Stuart audiences have come to
know. The preceding record, “Sin Miedo”
(Without Fear), harkened to the dance club
or the cruisin' strip as much as it did the
Salsa dancehall. Not so in his first project
for the Machete Music label, which is
ironic, considering the urban slant of the
majority of their productions. The round,
rich tone of the record seems to emulate the
fat '70s timbre of New York Salsa's heyday.
Stuart brings a certain barrio bad-boy
quality to all of his projects, and that is
certainly present, despite the classic
aesthetic. Hearing Stuart in this context
feels quite natural, and the results of the
new direction are rockin'. The writing is
among the hippest in modern Salsa, and the
stylistically savvy band, including some
Guaguancó, Bomba, and Comparsa sounds fresh
and enticing. Old style with a new attitude
is a great combination, in Stuart's hands.

Don Omar is one of the
most well known Reggaeton artists in Latin
America. His cross over success in the U.S.
has given him more exposure to English
speaking Reggaeton fans, making him one of
the more recognizable faces of Reggaeton
along with Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderón.
"Released
in mid 2006, KING OF KINGS finds Don Omar
challenging fellow Puerto Rican superstar
Daddy Yankee for the reggaeton throne. While
the opening track, "Intro: Predica,"
presents Omar energetically rapping en
Espanol over the string lines of the
self-appointed "hip-hop violinist," Miri
Ben-Ari, "Belly Danza" (featuring Beenie
Man) works a lively dancehall vibe. Of
course, Omar is sure not to leave more
traditional Latin sounds behind, as
evidenced by several frenetically rhythmic
tracks--including "Cuentale," to name just
one--on this assured and dynamic album."
"King
of Kings", became history's highest ranking
Reggaeton LP in the top 10 US charts, with
its debut at # 1 on the Latin sales charts
and the #1 spot on the Billboard Latin
Rhythm Radio Chart with his single "Angelito".
Don Omar was also able to beat the in-store
appearance sales record at Disneyworld's
Virgin music store previously set by pop
star Britney Spears.
With the highest charting debut by a
Reggaeton artist, Don Omar's "King of Kings"
enters at No. 7 with 68,000, besting Daddy
Yankee's No. 24 entry with 2005's "Barrio
Fino En Directo." "King of Kings" crowns the
Top Latin Albums chart as well.

Guayacán Orquesta are popular in Colombia
and the world of Salsa
for their Big Band
sound that's both bold and brassy. These
songs of love are painted brightly with
irresistible dance
beats.
“Xtremo”, confirms the
existence of one of the most important
musical groups in Colombia.
For about two decades,
Guayacán has been an icon of the Colombian
Music industry and one of the most important
of its genre.
“Xtremo”, has a modern touch
without loosing its identity and style and
has a romantic, energetic focus making it an
irresistible “must dance”.
“Hay amor, cuando hablan las
miradas” (There’s love when looks talk) has
been one of the most popular tracks in
Colombia in the last few months, not only in
Nightclubs or Radio but also in every street
corner.
With the same
strength that
Guayacán
initiated their musical success 20 years
ago, They once again conquer the unique
rhythm which identifies the
indistinguishable sound for which Colombian
Salsa is renown world wide.
“Juanes debut album, 2000's politically
charged “Fíjate Bien” (Take a good look),
announced the arrival of a thoughtful,
intelligent artist.
But it was 2002's stellar “Un día normal” (A
normal day) that solidified the Colombian
Singer/Songwriter's status as a Star. That
album earned six Latin Grammy awards and was
the top Spanish Language seller of the year.
Expectations couldn't be higher for “Mi
Sangre”.
As amazing as it sounds, “Mi Sangre” exceeds
its predecessors. The album exudes the best
elements of Juanes' previous works to create
a collection that is at once exciting,
provoking, sexy & energetic.
One of the best examples is leadoff single
“Nada valgo sin tu Amor” (I'm Worthless
without your Love), already perched atop
Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks chart. It's a
bittersweet mix of hopeful and sad lyrics
("That's why I want your love, always strong
in my mind/even if we are far, or even if we
are near, in the end") that could be a
simple declaration of “amor “or a love
letter from a wartime soldier.
Social issues figure prominently throughout
Mi Sangre (My Blood), in which Juanes
directly addresses Colombian conflicts.
"What's happening in the world today?" he
asks amid the grating rock rhythms of “Qué
Pasa”, "That in all the dailies I read the
same news of horror, lives that fall without
reason?"
Even amid such downcast subject matter, Mi
Sangre is a compulsive listen, with
surprises at every turn. Juanes gets flirty
during “Dámelo” (Give It to Me), in which he
sizes up a potential lover; “Para tu Amor”
is a faint-spell inducing Pop ballad that
shines with optimism.
“Tu Guardián”, (Your Guardian) the album
closer, is a sweet lullaby that seems tailor
made for Juanes 8 month old daughter,
“Luna”. It's here that Juanes electric
display of blood, sweat and tears epitomizes
why “Mi Sangre” is one of the year's best
releases, in any language”

Taking their name from the term "en clave,"
a reference to the heart beat of the
Afro-Cuban rhythm, this group is all about
Salsa, and nothing else.
With an honourable goal, to bring the love
of Salsa to a new level, n'Klabe set out to
turn the tides with “I Love Salsa”, their
debut CD for Sony International.
Lead vocalists Héctor, Félix and Johnny have
made a lot of progress toward that end. With
a number one hit on Latin charts to their
credit, "Amor de una Noche." N'Klabe is
already proving a success and a favourite
with younger audiences.
With a look even too clean cut to be called
a Boy Band, and even cleaner sound, the
Salsa that they love is all by the book. The
arrangements, vocal/instrumental
performance, and repertoire are all
unremarkable. Though not a strong selection
for those already familiar with the style,
this squeaky-clean debut performance has
found a home with a new audience.
A must have for all Salsa lovers!

The hottest sound sweeping the US hit our
local record stores on February 19.
A mix of hip-hop, reggae and
dancehall, the Reggaeton sound has already
taken off in Australian clubs and
Total Reggaeton
signifies the first
compilation release of its kind produced
locally.
Total Reggaeton
showcases the talents of
Australia’s No.1 Latin DJ, DJ DonJuan, who
will also be taking the
Total Reggaeton
release on the road with a
nationwide club tour.
Once dismissed as nothing more than a
passing fad, Reggaeton is now one of the
largest genres of music in the US and Latin
America with Latin music sales soaring by
23% thanks to its emergence. Reggaeton first
came about when local Puerto Rican artists
started translating Jamaican reggae into
Spanish, and then fuse the lyrics with
Panamanian style reggae beats. With the
massive success of Nina Sky, NORE, Pitbull
and Gasolina by Daddy Yankee in the urban
nightclubs of Australia, it won't be long
before Reggaeton sweeps this country's
airwaves.
Total Reggaeton
features some of the biggest
Reggaeton hits by some of the genre's
superstars including Daddy Yankee, Pitbull,
Don Omar and Tony Touch. With a DJ career
spanning 12 years Don Juan could be well
regarded as a pioneer in an industry
bursting at the seams with all things urban
to date. With his roots firmly planted in
the world of Latino music, it is easy to see
why the Don is Australia’s No 1 Latino DJ.
DJ Don Juan on the importance of the Latin/Reggaeton
movement in the Australian industry:
"Latin Music in general is important
worldwide not just in Australia because it
crosses so many racial barriers, and is
accepted and enjoyed by a massive cross
section of society. As long as the music in
this compilation inspires one person to go
to a Latino club and taste the culture and
feel the passion through the beat of the
music…then mission accomplished”.

Welcome to
the Indie World of the best Salsa/Pop Music
around today. This
is unique music unlike what you’ve
heard before in this genre and all our music
is live and original.
The
L.A. Carpool website has already received
one million hits. But that’s just
one indication of the band’s growing
popularity. L.A. Carpool has been featured
in a Salsa night club scene on the CBS television
show “First Monday,” and the
song “Salsa Inferno” was played.
The band has performed live on LATV, and
live on a Cable show for KJLA which broadcasts
to approximately 10 million bi-lingual households.
The
L.A. Carpool was also heard in the major
motion picture “NARC” starring
Ray Liotta and Jason Patric. The song “Mi
Guajira” was redone especially at
the music supervisor’s request to
have a male voice singing the song in Spanish.
The song plays in the background as Patric
and Liotta team up as partners in a café
scene, so watch and listen for it there.
The band and our individual names are acknowledged
in the credits at the end.
What makes this band accessible and different
is the layered “wall of sound”
that incorporates a full Latin rhythm section
of the best Los Angeles Salsa musicians,
playing typical mambo, son, cha’s
and all other popular musical idioms enjoyed
by Salsa dancers throughout the World. On
top of that, we layer the song with an intelligent
lyrics by Rick Ryan and pop sensibility.
Former Geffen Records Artist Frank Garcia
who also writes and produces the melody
lines in conjunction with producer/creator
Jack Gold, plays guitar. The finishing touches
are the rhythmic background vocals sung
in Spanish. World famous percussionist Richie
Gajate-Garcia adds to the “Tropical”
rhythm sounds, and the singer Gloria T (half
Colombian and half Irish) sounds sweet,
hot and sexy in both English and Spanish.
Give
the Carpool a ride for authentic tropical
sounds and for popular, familiar and contemporary
music. 70 minutes and 15 songs of great
music make this one of the hottest buys
available today in the music world. Take
us for a ride in your car and you’ll
never be the same again!

"A Latin dance
party with a twist, featuring Salsa from Greece,
India, Scotland and beyond"
Ok,
I'll be honest, when I first picked up this CD I
was a bit weary but nevertheless very intrigued...Salsa
from Greece, India, Scotland...what is this going
to sound like? Well all my questions where quickly
answered as I played the first track from Salsa
Celtica, a Scottish formed group. The slow-paced,
rhythmic Salsa was music to the ears. As I went
through track after track, the Salsa remained at
a great quality.
Listening
to Salsa music being sung in Greek, Arabic, Hindi,
Wolof, Douala and Creole is just a clear testament
on the influence Latin music has at a global level.
In particular Salsa and infectious Latin rhythms
which on this CD are mixed with different world
wide influences from other cultures.
A
track that stood out for me was No.9 by Orquesta
de la Luz. This band was formed in Japan and reached
great international success in the Salsa Scene.
Having performed alongside Latin artists, like Celia
Cruz and Tito Puente "they proved to the world
that you don't have to be Latino to love and play
Latin music". The song has a great rhythm and
ideal for the dance floor.
Putumayo
have certainly surpassed themselves with this unique
CD which is a "must have" for the Salsa
collection! -Editor
